Inspired by Nature

(and everything else)

Lisa Stark has been passionate about painting throughout years of tech jobs, motherhood, and moving from a life at the beach in Santa Cruz to the beach in La Ventana, Baja California Sur. So many things have inspired her paintings: nature, technology, windsurfing, and the spirit of “what if?”. “What if” drives her to experiment with subject matter, materials, and processes. Many surprises have revealed themselves through this experimental approach, and sometimes new techniques.

Along the way, Lisa has moved from a strictly representational style to one that pushes color, abstracts the interesting elements, and leaves room for imagination. Most pieces are composed with many layers and textures, so the process of adding (and sometimes subtracting) can take many weeks or even months. Just about any material is fair game, from paper to saw blades (yes, the pointy ones), with acrylic as the base, color, and glue.

Lisa feels that if viewers can find new things in the painting every time they look, the painting is a success!

Says Lisa, "Most recently I've been enjoying inspiration from very diverse landscapes. There's my winter base in Baja California Sur, Mexico, but I'm also excited to paint the amazing landscapes of Maine, the Pacific Northwest, and Maui, Hawaii. Having the opportunity to travel for my art is a wonderful source of ideas.”
